ABOUT Huevito (STACEY SING)
Partying was my first love. Colorful lights, booming speakers, and dancing arms lit by strobes is what attracted me, but it was the community that kept me coming back. This is was a space where queers, POC folx, and gender bending “weridos” gather to be free, vibrate in their own frequencies, and live without fear to be authentic. It was truly such a privilege to be accepted and exist in communion. I felt an urgency to document joy. This is where my love for photography began.
I am a Queer, East LA photographer and dj, and my work features people who might otherwise be overlooked. I seek to capture moments of resistance through celebration, people as vessels of joy, freedom of expression, and gathering. In a rising fascist society that seeks to erase anyone deemed as “other”, my photos highlight moments of connection, such as kisses on the dance floor and long exposures of dancing. I explore themes of gender, gender, sexuality, race, religion, and family.
Driven by my curiosity and love for conversation, I document communities I am a part of and have a role in which allows for a relay of a more honest and intimate reality and true to experience. I create a series of work based off specific events and follow up by inviting some of the participants to be photographed in a formal portrait. These portrait series serves as a microphone for an interview without the words. I actively choose to edit through a surrealist lens, achieved by exaggerating colors, adding high saturation.
Through on the ground shooting and formal portraits. These can look like goth drag shows, raves, Norteña lesbian parties, and trans burlesque shows. These archives are a testimony that people are living gorgeously: embracing eroticism, pushing societal norms, and creating community. I would like to encourage viewers to experience joy, not just a fleeting emotion, but a form of power that can be curated through intimacy, fashion, gathering, dance, play, and just merely existing.
